All About the Trinity Guildhall Initial Exam

After Book 5 of the Funky Monkey scheme, (approximately 50 lessons in total) your child will be ready to start studying for the Trinity Guildhall Initial Keyboard Exam, should you wish them to. This tells you a little bit about what it entails and what is required in order to pass. If you don't want them to study for the exam, you can just graduate from our scheme after the 5th book, or study the same pieces and take a 'no fail' informal exam with the Director, at a time to suit. We do encourage the children to go for the official one though, after all their hard work!

Helping Hand Videos!

How do I enter?

  • We will enter the pupils on your behalf. It costs £51 with an £7 administration fee (correct as of 2024)

  • A Trinity Exam Centre will be chosen closest to your regular Funky Monkey Centre

  • Keyboard kits are provided by us for exam use

  • An exam may well be scheduled in the school day, although we do request weekends or after school hours

What is required?

  • Regular practise must be done at home in between lessons, therefore a keyboard is required. It needs to have a back beat function, so a piano is not suitable!
    Pupils are required to study:

  • 5 scales

  • 3 pieces, with single finger chords and back beat.

  • Aural (listening tests) which are regularly practised in every class

  • Musical Knowledge (note names, type of notes, musical symbol recognition etc)

  • After two terms of study, they will be ready to sit the exam
